MegaUpload, the popular file hosting and sharing website has been taken down by federal prosecutors on request from the US authorities. MegaUpload been accused by the US Department of Justice of reproducing and distributing infringing copies of all types of copyrighted works, including movies, music, software and books. In fact it is one among the top 100 sites that allowed its users upload anything and everything of their computers for sharing it online. Now that MegaUpload is offline many users are left alone with no other option but to opt for alternate cloud services out there. The matter of the fact is sites like MegaUpload are not only used to distribute pirate content but also used by many legitimate users to distribute their personal files. They even had a premium service where users can buy more disk space to store and distribute files without data cap.

Though there exists many other popular cloud storage services like Dropbox, Box.net and SkyDrive they are most suitable for backing up personal files or for syncing it with multiple mobile devices. And when it comes to file-sharing, web services that can closely match MegaUpload includes HotFile, MediaFire and Rapidshare. These services allow a file of limited size to be uploaded to their services using free accounts and if you subscribe to premium plans often you get to enjoy higher disk space and bandwidth.
1. HotFile
HotFile, as a MegaUpload alternative lets you upload files upto 400 MB in size using their free accounts. HotFile also provides FTP access and remote file uploading that lets you fetch files from other services like Rapidshare. While you have unlimited storage space, files that have not been accessed for 90 days are deleted automatically. Also while downloading free account holders will have to wait for 15 secs and it doesn’t allow parallel downloads. 2. MediaFire
If you are in search of a file sharing service with decent interface and features then look no further. MediaFire sports an intuitive interface with drag-and-drop files to upload feature that lets you add files upto 200 MB in size when using free accounts. To quickly upload and share files you don’t even require an account with them but it is adviced to create a free account as it provides a lot more features. MediaFire free account holders get unlimited disc space and bandwidth with no download limit restrictions or speed limits. As long as the file size is not more than 200 MB you can enjoy MediaFire no restrictions. Note that the inactive files will be removed from their servers after a month time from the day of last activity. But you can always switch to their premium service to lift this and other restrictions including 200 MB size limit.
3. Rapidshare
If you are in search of a true MegaUpload alternative then Rapidshare should be the one you should opt for. The simple reason that Rapidshare lets you create and upload large files makes it a right choice. But like HotFile and MegaUpload here too you will have to wait for sometime for the download link to appear. Switch to premium account (RapidPro) if you want to store file for a longer period with quick access to files without waiting time. Premium members also gets encrypted file transfer to and from Rapidshare servers and parallel downloads.
