The virtual wireless hotpots are so common these days owing to the fact that anyone can set up a WiFi hotspot using a laptop, netbook or even a mobile device. While popular mobile platforms like iOS and Android now supports this feature by default, Windows 7 though WiFi hotspot capable requires the use of a free virtual router software. Popular among the lot, Connectify lite comes with few restrictions and requires you to switch to pro version to unlock all the features. If you are in search for a free alternative to Connectify for Windows 7 here is something can potentially replace it.

MaryFi is a freeware WiFi virtual router tool for Windows 7 that lets you quickly create a wireless hotspot to start sharing wired, 3G or USB card based internet connection. Not only that even without an active internet connection MaryFi can be used to wirelessly share files and folders on a network. The best part is any WiFi capable device be it a laptop, desktop or any mobile devices can connect to WiFi hotspost created using MaryFi for Windows 7.

The installation process is simple and all you have to do is follow the pdf help file that can be accessed from MaryFi tool interface. Download, install and launch MaryFi app. The MaryFi icon placed on the notification bar can be right clicked to hide and unhide the tool. First of all set a ‘Wi-Fi Name’ (SSID) and ‘Password’ for your virtual hotspot being created. Now hit ‘View Network Connections to Setup Internet Sharing’ to open ‘Network Connections’ window and setup MaryFi connection. It is adviced to follow the pdf tutorial attached with this tool by clicking ‘MaryFi How to use’ button on MaryFi UI (or follow it here). Once you have closely followed all the steps mentioned in that pdf come back to MaryFi tool and hit ‘Start Hotspot’ to create a wireless network out of your existing hardware. Once enabled and active you will see on status under ‘Network status’. MaryFi for Windows 7 supports both 32 and 64 bit architecture.
