The Ubuntu for Android has been unveiled with video demo and screenshots available now. Canonical Inc. has finally tipped their secret mobile project that was in papers for a long time. Though in alpha phase Ubuntu for Android promises to bring the Ubuntu desktop features right into Android phones. Any Android hardware with dual-core processor is capable of running this special flavor of Ubuntu that can double up as a mobile and desktop OS at the same time. When used on mobile phone it delivers the same Android 2.3+ features with Ubuntu theme/ apps and as a full-fledged Ubuntu desktop OS (with Unity UI) when connected to an external screen via a dock. The dual-core CPU is a must as Ubuntu for Android makes use of both the cores for smooth running of both the Ubuntu and Android OS.
Canonical’s idea behind this feature rich Ubuntu for Android is clear from this statement of theirs in which they stated that they want to unify mobile and desktop to provide a seemless integration between both the environment.
Android is a mobile solution, designed for a touch interface on a handheld device. On the desktop, where users expect a pointer-driven experience, a PC operating system is essential.
Ubuntu for Android demoed recently featured a unified environment where both Ubuntu and Android could access the same software resources including mobile address book, Calendars, Photos etc. Docking Android phone allows users to view, edit, call, text or email a contact. Even Facebook or Twitter profiles can be viewed from desktop. Ubuntu for Android when docked can also notify you of incoming calls and SMS with an option to reply from Ubuntu’s message indicator.
