How to Setup Free Hotspot Shield US VPN on iOS Device

The VPN services let users access geo location restricted web services from outside the zone. Also it enhances the security of web session as the data packets route through an encrypted channel. There are many VPN service providers both free and premium out there. But if you want to set up a VPN session on iOS devices including iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad then here is how to achieve that for free.

Hotspot Shield is offering free US-based VPN service that lets users access web services with US geo restriction and that cannot be viewed from outside USA.  All iOS devices supports L2TP, PPTP and IPSec protocols necessary for VPN session initiation. Hotspot Shield supports IPSec protocol so that you can set up and access US-based websites for free.

Steps to setup Hotspot Shield on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad :

Make sure that Wi-Fi is marked “OFF” in Settings -> Wi-Fi. Head over to this Hotspot Shield iPhone settings page and click Get Account ID to obtain Account and Password.

1. Configure VPN settings in Settings -> General -> Network -> VPN -> Add VPN Configuration:

  • Select the IPSec tab/pane
  • Description: HotspotShield
  • Server: 68.68.107.101
  • Account: zix1u0
  • Password: zix1u0
  • Use Certificate: OFF
  • Group Name: hss
  • Secret: hss

2. Save the settings and hit the “HOME” button to quit. Now you can turn Wi-Fi back “ON”.

To activate Hotspot Shield on your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad turn on the VPN settings. From “HOME” menu, go to Settings and click the “On” tab for VPN. Your Status will change to “CONNECTED” and the VPN icon will appear on top in the iPhone Tray when complete.

Thanks! I get my iPhone works with a free hotspot shield service ( from canada ) http://www.freevpn.ca , it works very smooth! Now I feel much comfortable to use the public wifi in coffee shop :-)

The 0 in the username and password above is a ZERO not an “o”,
I changed that and it worked fine :)
