How to Install GNOME 3 in Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal)

The Canonical Inc. backed Ubuntu desktop Linux distro saw the all new Unity desktop interface with the release of latest Ubuntu 11.04 codenamed Natty Narwhal. Unity theme from the house of Canonical is considered to the best GUI release till date and a major competitor to the latest GNOME 3. Unity has been introduced keeping in mind a powerful desktop and netbook environment which is attractive with easy navigation. But if you don’t like the Unity theme and if the latest version GNOME 3 desktop environment impress you better then you can install it now.

Here is how you can install GNOME 3 in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal distro via PPA. Follow the steps below and execute command lines one after the other carefully.

Steps to install GNOME 3 in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal:

1. Open terminal and punch in the following command line to add PPA using add-apt-repository,

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntugnometeam/gnome3
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntugnometeam/ppa-gen
sudo apt-get update

2. Now install GNOME 3 in Ubuntu by executing the following commands,

sudo apt-get install ugr-desktop-g3
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

3. Restart session.

    I got problem in first step:

    $ sudo apt-get install ugr-desktop-g3
    Reading package lists… Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information… Done
    E: Unable to locate package ugr-desktop-g3

    Hi, thanks for the quick guide but shouldn’t you mention that there is a high probability that unity will be broken after installing Gnome3 ?
