How to Enable Channel Switching Option in Firefox Builds

Firefox Aurora Nightly Logo

Things are moving so fast at Mozilla labs and they are about to introduce Chrome like build schedule and channels for Firefox. With the first Firefox 6 nightly build expected soon and aurora (Firefox 5 Alpha 2) channel introduced we now have a clearer picture about the future releases of Firefox including the upcoming Firefox 5 (June 21). Unlike the 2 year gap it took to release Firefox 4, Mozilla is switching to 18 week development cycle. That said switching between these half-baked channels have never been easy for developers. Switching between different alpha and beta channels required separate installation on your desktop. Mozilla though late is introducing an easy way to switch between Firefox channel builds.

Please note that this about:config tweak to enable channel switcher will work on Firefox alpha and beta builds only. Trying this on final release candidates would not result in anything wonderful.

Steps to enable channel switching option in Firefox:

  1. In address bar type in about:config and hit enter.
  2. Now create a new string called app.update.desiredChannel and enter some random value.
  3. Open Help > About Firefox and you’ll be able to Enable Channel Switching Option in Firefox.
