Install Skype in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal (Command Line)

The Ubuntu 11.04 Beta (Natty Narwhal) has been released and is available for download now. Check out screenshots and features here. Once after upgrading to Natty Narwhal if you want to install your favorite IM or video calling application, Skype then here is how to do so.

The process includes downloading Skype 32 bit or 64 bit deb file via Terminal using wget command (to retrieve file) and then installing it using dpkg (Debian packages) command. The libraries required to run Skype must be installed too.

Steps to install Skype in Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) :

1. Download Skype 32-bit or 64-bit file based on processor architecture,

For 32-bit version:

$ wget http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-linux-beta-ubuntu-32

For 64-bit version:

$ wget http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-linux-beta-ubuntu-64

2. Now install the libraries required to install and run Skype deb file,

$ sudo apt-get install libqt4-dbus libqt4-network libqt4-xml libasound2

3. Install skype deb file now,

$ sudo dpkg -i skype-file_name.deb

Here “skype-file_name.deb” is the name of the downloaded file which you can find from the folder where you saved the file.

4. Complete installation

sudo apt-get -f install
